Current Schoolhouse
A major goal of the Johnson County Historical Society has always been to provide visitors with a solid frame of reference on how schools have greatly changed over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Coralville schoolhouse museum juxtaposes the architecture, curriculum, punishments, games, and teacher’s perspectives surrounding the evolution of the one-room schoolhouse in their respective centuries. The JCHS is always looking for volunteers to work with that will help their staff fulfill their expressed goal of “education, preservation, and interpretation” (Johnson County Historical Society, Our History). The upstairs school room containing the 1940's classroom is not completely furnished and the JCHS hopes to have more artifacts donated in order to complete the room. The historical society not only encourages individuals to donate historically relevant items, but also to come out and visit the one-room schoolhouse. The JCHS has great interactive programs in the schoolhouse. Preserving the history of the county is of the utmost of importance to the JCHS and their dependence on the community is key. The JCHS hopes that visitors will want to see their contributions put to good use, and, at the same time, have the opportunity to investigate other interesting artifacts at the schoolhouse.
